The town of Regensburg is more than 1000 years old. Three rivers define the scenic location: Naab, Danube and Regen. The historical buildings, old churches and interesting museums attract a lot of culturally-minded visitors. Since there was hardly any damage done during WW II, you can experience architecture and history stretching in a unbroken line from the Roman settlement on the banks of the river Danube to the present-day city. In 2006, the old town of Regensburg and Stadtamhof was declared UNESCO world heritage sites.

The Thurn and Taxis castle, Saint Emmeram, can be visited on guided tours. Many different architectural styles can be encountered in their original setting. Other places of interest are, for instance, the old city hall, seat of the Imperial Diet; the Porta Praetoria, one of the two last remaining Roman gates in Germany; medieval towers; the Gothic cathedral as well as churches of various styles and provenances, most impressively the “Scot's cloister” with its hiberno-celtic main entrance; and a large number of museums: the historical museum with a famous Roman collection, the Domschatzmuseum showing vestments and sacred objects of the Roman catholic liturgy, the natural history museum and many more. Of special note is the “documenta”, a unique Jewish archaeological site situated under one of the city’s main squares.

However, Regensburg is no open-air museum - instead, modern living and historical surroundings make a perfect match. With more than 20,000 university students and a high pub density, the townscape is conspicuous for its many young people. Narrow lanes with many small stores invite you to browse and wander around. In the summer, the street cafés create an almost Italian atmosphere. Numerous restaurants, bars and beer gardens offer gastronomic experiences ranging from regional to international food. And there are quite a few excellent local breweries which provide an unusual range of beers; in summer you can sample those in our many enchanting beer gardens!

Regensburg’s importance as a research location and centre for technology is steadily increasing. Some big industries have settled here. All leading brands and shops are to be found in the three major shopping centres. The harbour and the railway station see a busy and lively transfer of goods every day of the year.

Cycle lanes and footpaths, several in -  and outdoor swimming pools as well as some wonderful lakes give wide scope to the pursuit of sports. For rowing enthusiasts, or for people preferring a nice quiet boat trip, there are several options on the rivers Danube and Naab. For baseball fans, Regensburg has a special attraction: the Regensburg Legionnaires are a highly successful local team, and their games attract a loyal crowd. In 2009, some of the baseball world cup events were hosted by Regensburg.

The city parks offer welcome green areas to go for a walk and relax in. The Jahninsel, an island in the middle of the river Danube,  and the river shores contribute to a feeling of 'green townscape'.

Regensburg has an extraordinarily lively and varied cultural scene. In both modern and historical buildings, you will find small theatres, concert halls and galleries. The Stadttheater (municipal theatre) puts on performances of plays, music, opera and ballet on three stages across the town. The “Regensburger Domspatzen” have existed as a boy choir of international renown for several centuries. All year round colourful festivals and events lure a large number of visitors to Regensburg. Check out our calendar of events for further details!

The old, young town on the Danube offers unforgettable highlights for everyone - and some visitors have been known to return regularly...
